JEFFREY HUDSON

Born 1619 in Oakham, Rutland, Jeffrey Hudson was one of the wonders of the age. His full story is told in my book Lord Minimus.

Queen Henrietta Maria and her dwarf Jeffrey Hudson
Sir Anthony Van Dyck, 1599 - 1641
1633 oil on canvas

This is the most famous portrait of Jeffrey. Painted when he was at the height of his fame, he is shown here with his devoted mistress Queen Henrietta Maria. You can find out much more about the painting here.

'Lord Minimus'
From an original by Nicholas Droeshutt

This engraving is a copy of the one which appears in the book The New Yeare's Gift, written 1636. The book, which is, as you might expect, miniscule, is a celebration of Jeffrey written (probably) by Thomas Heywood.

This particular engraving is found in James Caulfield's Portraits, Memoirs and Characters of Remarkable Persons from the Reign of Edward III to the Revolution (London, 1813).

Jeffrey Hudson and a Dog
From an original by Daniel Mytens

This is an engraving in Harding's Biographical Mirror of 1810. It is from one of several portraits of Jeffrey by Daniel Mytens which were painted between 1628 and 1630.

Having said that, there is now some doubt as to whether this is Jeffrey. I believe the NPG have revised their attribution.
