    Bookshop gets a make-over

I’ve revamped our online bookshop. You can now find all of our books there as well as a load of recommended reading and my favourite DVDs and CDs. Just in case you’ve got any money left after Christmas…

    The family of Jesus

I didn’t actually see the programme, but the blurb for Robert Beckford’s documentary about ‘The Secret Family of Jesus’ made me wince. “Did Jesus have a real human family? If so, why were they airbrushed from history and excised from the bible? Robert Beckford tells the story of the people who shared his bloodline.” Jesus [...]

    Happy Christmas!

A Happy Christmas to you all. Peace and goodwill to all mankind, womenkind and anyone else who knows me. Have a great Christmas and remember Bethlehem and the Middle East in your prayers. Now I’m off to peel the potatoes…

    The Donkey’s Song

I was speaking at a recent Carol service and I dusted off this poem. It got a great response, so I thought I’d share it here. Feel free to use it in your own celebrations, but please acknowledge me as the author if you do. (Unless people hate it, in which case you can tell [...]

    Coming Soon…

Just sending the Big Story off to the press. Should be in the shops in early March. In the meantime, here’s a sneak peek at the cover. And a bigger version here.

    Pan’s Labyrinth

Well, Claire and I went to see a film the other night which is a rare event. I watch loads of films, but mainly on DVD due to lack of planning with babysitting, etc. Anyway I chose Pan’s Labyrinth, which had received very good reviews and was directed by Guillermo del Toro. I love Hellboy [...]

‘Church of the Ark’ found on West Bank

This from the Daily Telegraph: Archaeologists claimed yesterday to have uncovered one of the world’s first churches, built on a site believed to have once housed the Ark of the Covenant. The site, emerging from the soil in a few acres in the hills of the Israeli occupied West Bank, is richly decorated with brightly [...]

Things you know you should like

Every couple of years or so I make another attempt to read James Joyce’s Ulysses. I do this because so many other writers I esteem think it’s the greatest novel ever written. I do it because I’m a writer and I should have read this book. I do it, because I first picked up a [...]

    Karl Barth

This cheered me up. A reporter once asked the theologian Karl Barth if he could summarize what he had said in his lengthy Church Dogmatics (which runs to around 14 volumes). Barth thought for a moment. Then he said: “Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.”

    And it’s raining as well.

I hate supporting England. It’s like some terrible drug habit. You know it’s harmful, you even try to tell yourself that ‘it’s only a game’. You know that, for all the highs, supporting any England team will almost inevitably lead to depression. So at the beginning of any tournament or series you do the sensible [...]
